Originally opened in the summer of 1995, Dogfish Head was not only the first brewery in Delaware but also the smallest commercial brewery in the country. Settled near the water of Delaware’s scenic Rehoboth Beach, Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats gave founder Sam Calagione a chance to brew beer for a living in the place he called home.
As their popularity grew, however, Calagione realized that his 12-gallon brewing system was no match for the amount of beer the masses were asking for and decided to open the official brewery in Milton, less than 30 minutes away. While the beer, which is now distributed in over 30 states, is brewed and bottled at the Milton brewery, the original Rehoboth Beach location still serves as the testing ground for small batch brews looking to one day make their way to the bottle.
