The Akron General Women’s Board Gala is an annual marquee, black-tie community event, raising millions of dollars over the years in support of important clinical, educational and operational needs at Akron General Medical Center. All proceeds from the 2013 gala benefit the Akron General McDowell Cancer Center and the Tony Gorant Community Leadership Institute.
This year’s gala promises to be an exciting soiree that includes a sumptuous dinner, dancing, unique auction items, a VIP cocktail reception, and great entertainment. This year’s celebrity master of ceremonies is Betsy Kling, Chief Meteorologist for WKYC TV-3, the NBC affiliate in Northeastern Ohio.
The Akron General McDowell Cancer Center is a regional referral cancer center providing state-of the-art care for patients coping with a diagnosis of cancer. Offering comprehensive care, close to home, the Akron General McDowell Cancer Center brings to patients innovative treatment options for a full range of cancers including: breast, colorectal, lung, liver and prostate cancer.
The Tony Gorant Community Leadership Institute is named after Anthony “Tony” Gorant, the late Senior Vice President of Community Affairs for Akron General who deeply cared about making the Akron Community a better place to live. The Institute named after him is an internal development initiative for Akron General leaders in partnership with Leadership Akron. It exposes leaders to a deeper insight into community needs and inspires a greater sense of service to all.

The Akron General Women’s Board has been serving the Akron community for more than 80 years, donating more than $6 million to important hospital services and clinical programs. In addition, board members volunteer at the hospital as well as serve as goodwill ambassadors for the Akron General Health System.
