The Akron Zoo welcomes children and adults to start snapping photos this summer of their favorite animals, landscapes or exhibits for the zoo’s annual Shutterbug Photo Contest running April 1 through September 30, 2013.
To help all aspiring photographers, the zoo will be holding its 5th annual Photography Workshop Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The workshop will be taught by local photography professional Dave Shoenfelt of Shoenfelt Photography. A beginner’s photography class will run from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. This class is for anyone with a new camera or someone just learning how to take pictures. An intermediate class will run from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and is for participants who are familiar with taking pictures, but would like to learn more of the skill.
Anyone with questions regarding which class to register for can contact Dave Shoenfelt at info@shoenfelt.com. Space is limited and people must register for the workshop. Both workshops will include tips and tricks of nature photography in a classroom and then participants will get a chance to walk around the zoo with the instructor and take photos. Registration is $20 and includes the workshop, parking and admission to the zoo for the entire day. Anyone interested can register at www.akronzoo.org or by calling (330) 375-2550.
The Shutterbug Photo Contest is an opportunity for amateur photographers of all ages to win prizes for their best shots. The three age categories are: Youth (children 11 and under), Teens (ages 12-17) and Adults (18 and over).
All photo entries must be taken at the Akron Zoo between April 1 and Sept. 30, 2013 and printed on 4”x 6” photographic quality paper in black and white or color. The entry fee for one photo is $5; each additional photo submitted by the same contestant is $3. Prizes, from the zoo and Dodd Camera, will be awarded for the top three winners in each category.
A panel of judges will evaluate all entries for composition, neatness, imaginative subject matter and overall photographic quality. All entries must be submitted no later than September 30, 2013. Winning photos will also be displayed on the Akron Zoo’s website at www.akronzoo.org. The Shutterbug Photo Contest is sponsored by Dodd Camera.
