Akron Film Header
The Akron Film Festival has grown in stature since its inception in 2002. The current incarnation, taking place at the Akron Art Museum, is a creative force that Akron should be proud of. Akron Film is in a prime position to not only bring local talent to the surface, but to bring voices of the world into the the streets of this small city / big town. Akron Film and The Akron Art Museum are providing an invaluable service to a creative community that is often times unheard, if not stifled here.
So, thank you Akron Film! It was refreshing and encouraging to see Akronites enjoying themselves in downtown after dark.
Exceptionally conceived and executed, it was evident that Akron Film's team of five board members poured their hearts and minds into this event. If you wanted to meet them, they were the ones selling the tickets, dimming the lights, running the projector and holding the doors for you as you entered the theater. The selection of films, though modest in number, was excellently chosen and arranged. The collateral for the event was as well assembled as the event itself -- from t-shirts and tickets to event passes and advertising, the whole shebang held together nicely.
You don't have to be snooty or even rich to enjoy seeing films that were not made in Hollywood, California, USA. Honestly, you just have to have the opportunity. And an event like this saves you the trouble of deciding on, and then tracking down the films. If you missed this event, then it's your loss...and eventually, the city's loss too. But don't worry, you can redeem yourself and your cultural sensibilities. Akron Film will be hosting more events, including The Freakishly Short Animation Festival on October 28th at 7 p.m (free). They will also be hosting a workshop, The Artist's Guide to Useful Technology, on October 17th at 1:30 p.m. (also free).
Now, let's talk about the films... (next posting)
